In the last 21 months I have received overwhelming support and love. I have also dealt with the occasional comment, opinion, and judgment that have left me scratching my head and wondering “What would make someone say that?” I was looking at cards the other day and it got me thinking about things people have said to me and what they would look like on a Hallmark card.
To anyone reading this who may have used these phrases with me or anyone else in your life navigating a difficult time in their life, it’s ok. You’re human and you’re allowed to put your foot in your mouth. Lord knows I’ve done it many times in my 37 years here on Earth. You are not in fact destined to spend eternity in the fiery pits of hell.. also known as Chuck E Cheese on a Saturday afternoon. So without further ado here’s a line of cards called “Cards Hallmark doesn’t make.. for a reason.”
- Hallmark doesn’t make a Get Well card that reads, “Get well. But you don’t really look sick at all. “
- Hallmark doesn’t make a Support card that reads, “Sorry you are dealing with these chronic illnesses, but I’m thinking it might be worth it if I could lose all the weight you have.”
- Hallmark doesn’t make an Encouragement card that reads, “All you have to do to feel better about your life is pray more.
- Hallmark doesn’t make a Concern card that reads “Wow you’re so skinny. Are you eating enough? Are your doctors concerned? Do you need treatment?”
- Hallmark doesn’t make a Get Well card that reads, “I need you to get well because your illnesses are really starting to affect me and my life.”
Yes, these are actual comments people have said to me at some point over the last 21 months. When someone is going through something like a chronic illness or any difficult season in their life, it can be hard to know what to say. Next time before you say anything, stop, think to yourself “Would this make a good Hallmark card?”, and if the answer is “No”, maybe it’s best to keep it to yourself.
